Chapter Twenty-One

Zaena’s boots clomped on the hard concrete, the sound echoing through the tunnel. Her headlamp cut through the darkness in the sewer pipe. Darvane walked behind her, his sword still in pieces and embedded in his armor.

After they’d arrived in Portland, they were greeted in a private hangar by Agent Lyle. He explained the basic situation before presenting footage of the short battle. After that, he drove them to a sewer access point.

“We don’t have direct comms set up this time,” Agent Lyle had explained. “The equipment was with the team, and I’d rather you get down there and wait for us to get more set up. We’ve still got a lot of cameras there. Do what you can. If it’s too much, I won’t blame you, but I want you to take this thing down for those guys.”

The memory of the suggestion elicited a snort from Zaena. She’d assured him they’d be able to handle it.

“What’s wrong, Princess?” Darvane asked.

“Agent Lyle implied we wouldn’t be able to win,” she explained. “I’m puzzled that he’d feel that way after witnessing our proficiency in previous battles.”

“His soldiers suffered a grim fate despite impressive weapons use,” Darvane replied. “He might think this creature unbeatable. Humans have a hard time understanding their weapons aren’t all-powerful.”

“Have you ever heard of a monster that can’t be defeated?” Zaena asked. “If there were such a thing, the Night Elves would have sent them to the battlefield. Difficult isn’t the same as impossible.”

Darvane chuckled. “No, I’ve never heard of a monster that can’t be killed. You’re right. For all their power, in the end, they are magical creations. All magic can be defeated with the right techniques. That might be the problem. Difficult might be impossible for non-magical beings.”

“I understand his concern, and I’ll avenge those men.” Zaena patted the hilt of the sword on her hip. “We both will. I appreciate your aid in this matter.”

“You’ve made this easy for me,” Darvane observed. “This was not an incident I was aware of. Not having to worry about interference from the humans means I can concentrate on the grand hunt before us.”

Zaena was worried because she was in another tunnel, which would limit her ability to fly. She quickly put the thought out of her mind.

Given the times, monsters would tend to end up in tunnels. A war hive or a hidden monster would have long been awakened by humans on the surface in any populated area. Non-aquatic monsters would be crushed by the weight of the ocean if they emerged there.

Underground refuges were, by process of elimination, the most likely places for surviving monsters. Monsters appearing in the unclaimed wilderness would be noticed by humans.

“One aspect of this situation does concern me,” Zaena announced. “I didn’t want to say it in front of Agent Lyle, so I assured him we would handle it, but I’m unfamiliar with this swamp ripper. None of my tutors spoke of a creature resembling what we saw on that video.”

“Don’t let that bother you, Princess,” Darvane replied.
